Breaking the Cycle: Coastal Bend's Trailblazing Program Empowers Families to Escape Poverty

In Corpus Christi, Texas, where poverty rates climb to 18.2%—higher than the state's 13.8% average—Catholic Charities of the Coastal Bend launched a groundbreaking program last year.

Circles of the Coastal Bend, the first of its kind in Texas, bridges critical gaps through monthly meetings focused on essential life skills.

Participants learn financial literacy, budgeting, communication, goal setting, and relationship building to shatter poverty's hold.

 

Program coach Oscar Martinez facilitates sessions that cover "the gamut of everything a person needs to be successful."

He emphasizes family as a key motivator, helping parents model resilience for their children.

This holistic approach not only builds personal growth but fosters community-wide change.

 

Single mother of three Amber Amador joined to rewrite her family's story, breaking free from paycheck-to-paycheck struggles.

With the program's guidance, she achieved homeownership in just one year—a milestone she once thought impossible.

"It’s not too late to get yourself together and push forward," Amador shares, inspiring others to seek support.

 

Fellow participant Maribel Ruiz, mother of five, uses Circles to show her kids limitless possibilities beyond traditional roles.

"One of my girls asked if she has to be just a stay-at-home mom—I told her she can pursue any career," Ruiz says.

The program extends benefits to children, teaching them about savings and perseverance for a brighter future.
