With the new Harbor Bridge now open in Corpus Christi, Texas, city leaders are channeling $29.2 million into revitalizing Northside communities. The Harbor Bridge Parks Mitigation Plan targets parks, trails, and public spaces in Hillcrest, Washington-Coles, and North Beach. These areas endured years of construction chaos, and now they're set for a major glow-up.
At Tuesday's city council meeting, officials will consider a $16.4 million contract with local firm JE Construction Services.Work could kick off later this year, wrapping up by September 2026.
Residents welcome the changes but voice frustrations over delays. Hillcrest's Renior L. Knox Sr. notes, "They’ve done it all over the city. They just haven’t done it here." He sees it as a vital step toward healing the neighborhood's wounds from the bridge project.
In North Beach, hopes run high for better trail connections, but safety remains a concern. Ron Graban of the North Beach Community Association urges flashing crosswalks amid heavy truck traffic. "The Port brings 80,000-pound trucks through here—we need signals so everyone gets home safe."
Key projects include an amphitheater, pavilion, and food truck court at Washington Coles Park.
The T.C. Ayers Aquatic Center, a separate bid, seeks specialized contractors for pool expertise.
If approved, construction starts as early as September, directly impacting several sites. This initiative not only mends past disruptions but fosters community pride. Corpus Christi's Northside is poised for a brighter, more connected future. |
