Community Unites to Equip Students for Success |
In late July, West Oso families joined forces with KRIS 6 News and the United Way of the Coastal Bend for the 35th annual Operation Supply Our Students (Operation SOS) campaign, ensuring local kids start the school year fully equipped.
This year’s drive serves 43 school districts across 10 Coastal Bend counties, with plans to distribute supplies to more than 22,000 students.
To date, organizers have raised roughly $75,000, funding deliveries to 40 districts in need.
At John F. Kennedy Elementary, where classes resume on August 12, Principal Carpenter emphasized that receiving essential notebooks, pencils, and backpacks lets students “focus on learning and being the best version of themselves.”
West Oso Superintendent Moore echoed that sentiment, noting that not every family can afford the complete supply list, making community generosity vital.
The month‑long effort, running July 1–31, combines monetary donations, supply drives, and volunteer-led distribution events.
From school parking lots turned pop‑up markets to neighborhood drop‑off bins, Operation SOS mobilizes local businesses, faith groups, and civic organizations.
Volunteers say the most rewarding moment is seeing kids leave with the tools—and confidence—they need.
Residents and organizations eager to support can still donate funds, host a drive, or volunteer at upcoming events by contacting Christy Tupaj at (361) 882‑2529 ext. 125. |
